Three things to know about Eden Supportive Living

1 This new nine-story downtown Champaign center has 150 supportive living apartments designed for adults with physical disabilities. Center Director Kim Cross says the apartments — all single-dwellings for people without roommates — are contemporary-style, energy-efficient apartments, but they've been built to accommodate people in wheelchairs. Some of the features include roll-in showers, laminate parquet flooring to decrease the tripping hazard, sinks, microwave ovens and other fixtures installed within reach from a sitting position and floor-to-ceiling windows so someone in a wheelchair can see outside.

2 Supportive living is an assisted living model administered by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services that combines housing and needed services for people age 22 and older with a variety of physical disabilities, allowing people who might have otherwise needed to live in a nursing home to live independently. Eden Supportive Living is licensed for residents from ages 22-64. Its services that include a licensed 24-hour staff, housekeeping and laundry, medication management, three meals a day and social, educational and life-skills programs are all included in the rent.

3 This is the third Eden Supportive Living development. Others are in Chicago and North Aurora. A fourth is under development in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood.
