Innovation Celebration award nominees revealed

CHAMPAIGN — Twenty-four individuals and groups have been nominated for awards to be given at the ninth annual Innovation Celebration in Urbana.

The awards — which recognize innovation and entrepreneurship in Champaign County — will be presented during public ceremonies from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27 at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, 1205 W. Clark St., U.

Following are the nominees for eight of the awards:

— Economic Development Impact Award: Fox/Atkins Development, developer of the University of Illinois Research Park; restaurant/bar owner Carlos Nieto; and Walter Lohmann, recently retired site director of the Caterpillar Simulation Center in the UI Research Park.

— Entrepreneurial Excellence Management Award: Dan Cermak of Volition; Mike Folk of The HDF Group; and Bill Cope of Common Ground Publishing.

— UI Innovation Transfer Award: Stephen Boppart, head of the Biophotonics Imaging Lab at the UI's Beckman Institute; Stephen Sligar, director of the UI's School of Molecular and Cellular Biology; and Scott White, UI professor of aerospace engineering.

— Innovation Longevity Award: Acoustic MedSystems of Savoy; Prominic.NET of Champaign; and Pavlov Media of Champaign.

— Entrepreneurial Excellence Advocacy Award: Ray Price of iFoundry; Jed Taylor of the UI Technology Entrepreneur Center; and Dennis Beard of Serra Ventures.

— Entrepreneurial Excellence New Venture Award: Phi Optics; VeriFlow Systems; and Electroninks.

— Entrepreneurial Excellence Student Startup Award: KantWait; Servabo; and Miss Possible.

— Entrepreneurial Excellence Social Venture Award: [co][lab]; Pilot; and Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, UI professor of curriculum and instruction, and the team of EnLIST (Entrepreneurial Leadership in STEM Teaching & Learning).

Parkland College will present a ninth award — the Innovation in Engagement Award — that evening.

The Champaign County Economic Development Corp. works with multiple sponsors, including several units of the UI, in putting on Innovation Celebration.
