Less pain at the pump: Most competitive gas brands in Illinois

The most competitive gas brand in Illinois during 2013 was Costco, according to GasBuddy.com, which did a study of most competitive brands by state.

In Illinois, Costco sold gas, on average, for 16.13 cents per gallon less than other stations in the ZIP codes Costco was in.

Second place went to Sam's Club, where the average daily differential was 12.82 cents per gallon less than other stations.

Thorntons was in third place, with a differential of 4.48 cents per gallon; Speedway was fourth, with a 3.09-cent differential; and Kroger in fifth, with a 3.08-cent differential.

In Indiana, the most competitive brands were: Sam's Club (8.57 cents per gallon less); Admiral (4.19-cent differential); Kroger (3.05-cent differential); Murphy USA (2.65-cent differential); and Pilot (1.90-cent differential).

Nationally, Costco was deemed the most competitive — just as it was in 2012. It was followed by Arco, Quik Stop, Fred Meyer and Sam's Club.
