Alliance sponsors 'Local Flavors' lunches, dinners

A roundup of business news:

URBANA — The Illinois Stewardship Alliance has released its schedule of "Local Flavors" lunches and dinners that feature seasonal, locally grown and produced food.

Ten restaurants in Champaign-Urbana are taking part in the project this year, with five serving lunches and five serving dinners.

Under the program, chefs use locally grown, seasonal products to create special dishes to add to their regular menu the day of the event.

Lunches are held the first Tuesday of each month from June to October, and dinners are generally held the third Thursday of each month.

Milo's Restaurant kicked off the lunch series June 3. Restaurants hosting future Local Flavors lunches include: Pizza M on July 1; Pekara Bakery and Bistro on Aug. 5; Common Ground Food Co-op on Sept. 2; and the Urbana Butcher Shop on Oct. 7.

Escobar's Restaurant will launch the dinner series on June 19, followed by Piato Cafe on July 17, Bacaro Wine Lounge on Aug. 14 (actually the second Thursday of the month), Destihl Restaurant and Brew Works on Sept. 18 and Big Grove Tavern on Oct. 16.

Reservations are encouraged and can be made by contacting participating restaurants directly. Menus can be found on the alliance's Facebook page — — up to two weeks before each event.

The Illinois Stewardship Alliance holds similar events in Springfield, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria. Urbana's Market at the Square is a partner on the local project.

"It's great to see the produce, meat, dairy, cheese and more that you can find out at the market more readily available in our local restaurants," said Natalie Kenny-Marquez, market manager of Urbana's Market at the Square.
