Quick read: Getting fresh in Illinois

It's the season to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables from the area, and the "Illinois: Where Fresh Is" website makes finding them a little easier.

The website — illinoiswherefreshis.com — lists the Illinois farmers' markets, roadside stands, U-pick fields/orchards and on-farm sales closest to you.

As of last week, the site listed five farmers' markets in East Central Illinois, including:

— Urbana's Market at the Square, open 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

— Arthur Produce Auction (specializing in large-quantity sales), open 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Fridays.

— Downs Village Market, open 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

— Mattoon Farmers Market, open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.

— Monticello Main Street Farmers Market, open 3 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, beginning June 19.

Directions to each location are available at the site.

The site also gives information on 25 roadside stands, 23 U-pick sites and 46 on-farm sales in East Central Illinois. Among the more unusual offerings: 18 varieties of garlic available at Tomahnous Farm north of Mahomet,

Other places to look for fresh produce, according to the website, include: the Illinois Specialty Growers Association site (specialtygrowers.org) and its Prairie Bounty of Illinois online directory.
