Showcase of Homes returns

Showcase of Homes returns

SAVOY — If you're one of those folks who like to see what's trending in new home construction, the Champaign-Urbana Showcase of Homes may provide you with clues.

The open house, which features seven newly built homes in Savoy's Prairie Meadows subdivision, begins Friday and runs through June 29. Hours are 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends.

Tickets are $5 on-site or online from the Home Builders Association of East Central Illinois (showcaseofhomes.hbaeci.com). Tickets may also be available from individual association members.

This year's homes are clustered on Denton Avenue near the intersection with Derby Drive. Six are on the west side of Denton, with backyards overlooking the lake in Prairie Meadows Park. The seventh is on the east side of Denton.

Four of the homes have price tags ranging from $359,900 to $439,900. Two other houses have prices yet to be determined, and the remaining house has already sold. The homes generally range from 3,000 to 3,600 square feet, and most have two stories.

Because many of the homes have finished or partially finished basements, the one-story homes actually have two levels, and the two-story homes have three.

Even though family sizes tend to be smaller than they once were, all the homes have plenty of places to sleep. Five of the homes have five bedrooms, and two of the homes have four bedrooms.

Judging from this year's entries, three-car garages are becoming standard. The only home without one boasts a 21/2-car garage, perhaps for those "green" families that want space for bikes instead of a third car.

High ceilings and big fireplaces appear to be popular features. Ironwood Homes' "The Lexington" has a great room with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. "The Barrington," by Cramer Custom Homes, has a two-story family room with an 18-foot stone fireplace. Signature Homes increased the first-floor height of "The Geoffrey" to 10 feet and included transoms above all windows facing the lake.

And if folks aren't spending enough time in the bathroom already, they'll be tempted to spend more, given some of these designs.

Take, for instance, the amenities in the master bedroom suite of "The Geoffrey," which offers an oversized whirlpool tub and an oversized walk-in shower. According to the home's description, "the shower comes complete with two separate shower heads, a rain shower head and body sprayers, which are electronically controlled, including a remote."

There shouldn't be waiting in line for the bathroom either, in these homes. All have at least three bathrooms, and some have four or 41/2.

Woodwork is a draw in some of the homes. Miller Construction's "The Cole" is billed as a Prairie-style house with soft-scraped hardwood. Ironwood's "The Lexington" boasts a wood ceiling in the great room.

And don't bring dirt into these houses if you choose to live there. Hang up your coat, stash your shoes and take off your sweaty work clothes. Armstrong Construction's "The Custom Remington" has a mud room with locker systems off the garage, and Cramer Custom Homes' "The Barrington" is equipped with a mud room with built-in lockers and desk area en route to the laundry room.
