5 banks up, 1 down in latest ratings

Five banks were upgraded and one was downgraded in the latest ratings from BauerFinancial based on data for the financial quarter that ended Dec. 31, 2014.

Midland States Bank was the lone bank to be downgraded, falling from 5-star ("superior") to 4-star ("excellent"). The Effingham-based bank has 32 offices in Illinois, including one in Champaign, plus an office in Chesterfield, Mo.

Editor's note: On Monday, March 16, BauerFinancial revised its rating for Midland States, returning it to a 5-star rating.

Two banks that previously had 2-star ("problematic") ratings were upgraded. First National Bank of Sullivan was elevated to 3-star ("adequate"), while First Federal Savings & Loan of Central Illinois improved to 31/2-star ("good"). The Shelbyville-based savings and loan also has offices in Windsor and Charleston.

Also receiving upgrades were:

— Citizens State Bank of Milford, which improved from 31/2-star ("good") to 4-star ("excellent"). The bank also has a branch in Crescent City.

— First Midwest Bank, which improved from 4-star ("excellent") to 5-star ("superior"). The Itasca-based bank has more than 100 locations, including branches in Champaign and Danville.

— Peoples Bank & Trust of Pana, which improved from 4-star ("excellent") to 5-star ("superior"). The bank has 10 offices, including one in Charleston.

The other 69 banks with offices in East Central Illinois retained the ratings they had at the close of the Sept. 30 quarter.

Two-thirds of area banks received BauerFinancial's highest rating of 5 stars. None got the lowest, second-lowest or third-lowest ratings — zero stars, 1-star and 2-star.

BauerFinancial bases its ratings on capital ratios, profitability trends, levels of delinquent loans, charge-offs and repossessed assets, liquidity, historical data and supervisory ratings by regulatory agencies. BauerFinancial is one of several bank-rating services. It distinguishes itself from others by making its ratings accessible to the public.
