Indian restaurant to replace Minneci's at The Crossing

CHAMPAIGN — An Indian restaurant is set to replace the recently closed Minneci's at The Crossing in southwest Champaign.

Amaravati will be an expansion for owners Siva Busa and Sarbjit Jhattu, who have two Indian restaurants in Bloomington and wanted to expand to Champaign to capture some of the university market.

They've already put up signs at their new location, though they don't know when they'll open. Still needing to be done: renovating the interior and receiving the approval of the health department.

"We're excited to come here to this location," Busa said.

In Bloomington, one of their restaurants focuses on food from northern India; the other southern Indian cuisine. Amaravati will feature food from both regions. It will also have a lunch buffet seven days a week.

Jhattu has been in the restaurant industry since 1999, Busa since 2006, and they said their restaurants in Bloomington are doing well.

Busa said they chose the location at The Crossing because it was available and because "this is a great area." They also plan to eventually open a food truck to attract more of the university crowd.

The restaurant will have a full bar and offer delivery and catering.

Ashley Quach, a commercial broker with Coldwell Banker Commercial Devonshire Realty who helped Busa and Jhattu find their location, said she expects Amaravati to do well.

"They're the only Indian restaurant out in that area," she said.
