Huntington Tower's antenna comes down

CHAMPAIGN — The long-decommissioned antenna on top of Huntington Tower is coming down.

On Thursday, workers from Hi-Tech Towers Inc. of Gibson City removed the large metal structure from the top of the building at 201 W. Springfield Ave.

Coldwell Banker Commercial Devonshire Realty's Zach Wetherell said the antenna had three large relay dishes on it and was installed in the 1980s when Quest Communications was a tenant.

The business posted pictures of the removal on Twitter:

It hasn't been used since at least 2007, when Wetherell started working there.

"It was already decommissioned probably in the '90s or early 2000s," he said.

The building's owners, Shar LLC, wanted it taken down.

"It could be viewed as a liability," Wetherell said. "And it didn't look that great, let's be honest."
