N-G sports section named among nation's best for eighth-straight year

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — For the eighth consecutive year, The News-Gazette's sports section was named one of the country's best by the Associated Press Sports Editors in its annual writing and sections contest.

The N-G received a Top 10 nod for both its Sunday Section and Special Section in the 30,000-75,000 circulation division. It was also named as an honorable mention (Top 10) for Best Website (30-75,000).

Also, multimedia specialist Anthony Zilis won a Top 5 national honor in Short Video (30,000-75,000) for his story on the IHSA boys' state track and field meet.

"As always, so many people doing so many things put us over the top," N-G sports editor Matt Daniels said. "The section honors are a reflection of the teamwork that continues to give us an edge nationally."

It marked the 29th time in the last 22 years the newspaper's sports section has been honored in the APSE contest.

The website award was The N-G's first since the category was introduced.

"Having everyone under one roof — and operating on one team as News-Gazette Media — has made our online strategy even stronger," Daniels said. "There's a reason our audience has never been bigger and continues to grow daily."

The APSE awards, voted on by sports editors and journalists from across the nation during four days of judging, honor work published in 2017.

Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE summer conference in Nashville, Tenn.
