Getting Personal: Danville radio stations manager Mike Hulvey
What time do you typically get up? What do you do the first hour of the morning?
I wake up every morning at 4 a.m. I read six newspapers online, five news and sports sites along with visiting our company sites and checking e-mail.
What did you have for lunch today? Where? Who with?
I ate at El Toro in Danville. We had a lunch for a member of our staff who was taking another assignment. I had a crispy taco, enchilada, rice and beans, Diet Pepsi served with a smile. I always order the same thing when visiting any Mexican restaurant – can't help it!
Best high school memory:
Too many to list just one. Great memories from our DHS radio staff, having debates with history teacher Jim Banks (I liked Reagan, he didn't), the time we jammed a bunch of friends in my 1976 Dodge Colt station wagon and got pulled over after someone flipped a cop the bird, cruising in the hot rod cars my friend Pat Taylor and his dad built or my favorite assignment of writing a research paper on WWII flying ace Pappy Boyington, who wrote me a letter back that was included in my project. He died a short time later, and I visited his grave site in Arlington to say "Thank You."
Tell me about your favorite pair of shoes.
I have a pair of Johnson and Murphy tassel loafers that I love because they go with suits, slacks or jeans. The problem is that JM doesn't make that model anymore and I wish I had ordered four or five pairs so I would have them until I retired.
What does a perfect Sunday afternoon include?
Nothing. I spend my week taking care of business, community and other things. On Sundays it's a time to decompress and family. In the fall/winter, it's Colts games with my kids; in the spring/summer, it's motor racing on radio and TV. I enjoy F1, IndyCar and NASCAR or just spending time on the deck with neighbors enjoying conversation and cool beverages. Sunday afternoon is a protected time in our house.
Was there one book you read as a child that you still cherish? Own? Re-read?
"Green Eggs and Ham." I love that book. Sam I Am never gave up.
Too many times people give up when life throws curve balls. The book tells the story better than any written to never give up. I've never eaten green eggs. However, I have had brown eggs from my grandpa's farm. Does that count?
Where on Earth are you dying to go? Why?
I haven't seen all 50 states yet, I've got 10 to go! I love Alaska – my favorite place we have been fortunate enough to visit!
Tell me about your favorite pet.
I'm a cat man, but my wife loves her dog; Indy 500 Hulvey. My two cats, Pagoda and Apollo, are both rescued. Our family has had cats since I was a little kid. My first cat was Scooter, who still resides in our home as his ashes were returned to us after his passing a few years ago.
Have you discovered as you matured that you are becoming like one of your parents? Which one and how?
I see both in the mirror every morning. My dad for his caring heart, emotion and love of hard work; my mom for her keen interest in current events and family. I'm glad I got my dad's hair as my brother has to wear a hat every day because he got his from my mom's family.
What would you order for your last meal?
Mexican. Lots of nachos, tacos, enchiladas – and go ahead and throw in some Hooters Hot Wings to boot!
What can you NOT live without?
Diet Pepsi and my family.
Who do you have on your iPod? No iPod? What kinds of music do you like?
I have a lot of radio shows on podcasts. I listen to racing shows, talk shows and books on tape too. As for music, I like Classic Rock and Country. You might find Styx and Jo Dee Messina playing in my car.
What's the happiest memory of your life?
Easy, Jan. 15, 1988, and Sept. 25, 1992. Those are the days my daughters Marissa Lynn and Macey Louise were born. I can remember almost everything about those days. Unforgettable!
If you could host a dinner party with any three LIVING people in the world, what three people would you invite and why?
Michael Beschloss, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Fowler Connell. All three love history and the conversation about this country, politics and the presidency would be fascinating – not much eating but a whole lot of listening.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Do your best and find a way to win. My parents never asked anything but our best growing up. My sister and brother and I all had our own bar set for us and that was our best. We were measured against ourselves and not each other. I try to pass that same lesson to our four kids now. It's my hope they do the same for our grandchildren.
What's your best piece of advice?
See above.
What was your first job, and how much did you make an hour?
I worked at the youth desk at the YMCA for around $3 per hour. I also worked for a local wood shop for near minimum wage while volunteering at a local radio station.
What was a pivotal decision in your career, and how did you arrive at that decision?
I turned down my dream job for my most important one. In 2002, I was offered the job as director of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. There is no event that means more to me than the Indy 500. This year will be my 32nd year at the track in May. When I was young, my dream was to be a part of the IMS Radio Network, perhaps someday run it. Well, that dream was realized in November 2002 when that very position was offered to me. After counsel with my business partner, family and close friends, we held a family meeting at the kitchen table and voted. The final tally was 5 to 0 (I abstained) to take the job, but when the kids left the room I told my wife the price of my dream job was too high. I would be sacrificing my most important job as a dad to hold my dream.
The next day I turned it down. I have been blessed by that decision and haven't looked back with regret since.
Do you have a bad habit? What is it?
Drink too much Diet Pepsi, don't exercise enough and go to bed too early.
How do you handle a stressful situation?
I slow it down. No one makes good decisions when chaos is flying around. Stop, listen, apply common sense and when possible use the Golden Rule. It works almost every time.
