Common Ground board OKs expansion project
URBANA -- Construction is expected to begin in October on the expansion of Common Ground Food Co-Op at Lincoln Square Village.
The cooperative's board of directors voted this week to go forward with a $1.6 million expansion that will nearly triple the store's retail space.
The store plans to remain open during construction, with the expansion expected to be complete by spring 2012, according to a news release from the co-op.
As reported earlier, Common Ground plans to expand to the north, growing from 4,000 square feet to 9,500 square feet. Its retail space will go from 2,150 square feet to 6,000 square feet.
Cooperative members have expressed interest in adding an in-house bakery, an espresso and juice bar, a selection of fresh regional meats, a variety of local and organic beers and wines, plus sandwiches made to order and a self-service cold and hot food bar.
To pay for the project, Common Ground plans to raise more than half the cost through retained earnings and loans from the co-op's owners.
A campaign will be launched in June to raise $600,000 in loans from the co-op owners.
"It's a rare opportunity to use your money to grow something that enriches your community, and that you can watch unfold and be an active part of," said Jacqueline Hannah, Common Ground's general manager.
The co-op is open to the public, and all shoppers have the option of becoming an owner. They do so by purchasing equity shares for $60. Benefits of ownership include owner-only monthly sales and owner appreciation discount days.
