Jobless rates drop in May
Unemployment rates in most parts of East Central Illinois continued to fall in May, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
The only area county where the unemployment rate didn't budge was Coles County, at 8 percent.
Champaign County's rate fell to 7 percent in May, down from 7.2 percent in April.
Vermilion County's rate dropped to 8.8 percent, down from 9.6 percent in April.
Here are the May rates for other area counties and the changes from April:
— DeWitt, 7.1 percent, down from 8 percent.
— Douglas, 7, down from 7.9.
— Edgar, 8.6, down from 9.2.
— Ford, 7.7, down from 8.3.
— Iroquois, 7.5, down from 8.4.
— McLean, 5.9, down from 6.2.
— Moultrie, 6.1, down from 6.7.
— Piatt, 5.8, down from 6.4.
In Champaign County, 7,371 people were out of work and looking for a job in May, while 98,267 people were employed.
In Vermilion County, 3,234 people were out of work and looking for work in May, while 33,325 held jobs.
Among area cities, Danville saw the biggest change in its unemployment rate: 9.2 percent, down from 9.7 percent in April. Champaign's dropped from 7 percent to 6.9 percent, and Urbana's was unchanged at 7.3 percent.
Of the state's 12 metropolitan areas, Champaign-Urbana had the fourth-lowest rate, behind Bloomington-Normal, Springfield and the Quad Cities. Danville had the eighth-lowest rate, with Decatur, Chicago, Kankakee and Rockford ranking behind it.
In May, 21 Illinois counties had unemployment rates lower than 7 percent. The lowest was Brown County, at 3.6 percent.
Most of the counties in northern Illinois had rates of 8 percent or higher, with the highest rate, 13.4 percent, in Alexander County in extreme southern Illinois.
