Area credit union ratings hold steady; 21 in black

No area credit unions were downgraded — or upgraded — in the latest ratings from the BauerFinancial rating service.

Of 29 area credit unions, 12 received superior ratings, six got excellent ratings and four got adequate ratings.

The other seven were not rated, six because they are too small and the seventh — Credit Union 1 in Rantoul — because it is insured privately, rather than by the National Credit Union Administration.

Of the 29 credit unions, 21 were either profitable or broke even during the first six months of 2011. The other six showed losses for the six-month period, but only four of those had losses for the quarter that ended June 30.

Three credit unions in the area had nonperforming assets that exceeded 3 percent of total assets, as of June 30.

Those included Credit Union 1, at 4.39 percent; the Urbana Postal Credit Union at 3.83 percent; and Danville Consolidated Credit Union at 3.14 percent.

All three were profitable for the most recent quarter and for the first half of the year.

No area credit unions received BauerFinancial's three lowest ratings of zero stars ("lowest"), 1-star ("troubled") or 2-star ("problematic").

Credit Union 1, a privately insured institution, was the largest of the area credit unions, with assets of $649 million as of June 30.

BauerFinancial bases its ratings on capital ratios, profitability trends, levels of delinquent loans, charge-offs and repossessed assets, liquidity, historical data and supervisory actions by regulatory agencies.
