Champaign council to vote on jobs, mosquito control

CHAMPAIGN — The city council this week will be asked to approve $195,000 for a summer youth jobs program and, separately, $44,000 for a mosquito control program.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Champaign City Building, 102 N. Neil St.

The council has already informally approved the summer jobs program, which officials say will create 150 employment opportunities for Champaign students ages 14 to 19.

The program is scheduled to run from June 13 to July 29, and officials have said it will fill an employment gap in the community. As the recession has taken hold and federal dollars for similar programs have dried up, there have been fewer and fewer jobs for students with free time during the summer.

Students are being chosen on need-based qualifications — to be accepted into the program, they must qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches. Each student worker will be paid $8.25 per hour.

In other business, the council will vote on whether to contribute $44,000 to a $70,000 program to manage mosquitoes in Champaign, Urbana and Savoy.

The program, for which each municipality is paying based on population, would allow the Champaign-Urbana Public Health Department to test and treat potential mosquito breeding sites. Mosquitoes are capable of spreading diseases like West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis from birds to humans.

According to city documents, there had been no reports this year of West Nile virus in birds or humans through May 5.
