It's Your Business: Family Video to reopen its Lincoln Avenue store
The closing of the Blockbuster video store in Urbana earlier this spring has prompted another chain retailer to expand its presence in the area.
Family Video plans to reopen its Lincoln Avenue store near Fairview Avenue in Urbana.
Regional director Yvonne Chenault said it's aiming for a June 30 opening.
"We're super excited to open that location again. After the Blockbuster store closed, there was no place in that area for renters to go. There's quite a market share over there not being served," she said.
The Urbana Blockbuster Video, at 105 E. University Ave., closed earlier this spring after the Dallas-based company announced it was shuttering hundreds of U.S. locations. Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010.
Family Video also has stores at 1901 S. Philo Road, U, and 1101 N. Mattis Ave., C. Demand has been great, and those stores will remain open, according to Chenault.
The company closed the store at 805 N. Lincoln Ave., U, several years ago due to the many video stores in the area, including the now-closed Blockbuster. In addition to the Blockbuster store closing, Hollywood Video also closed a Champaign location in 2010.
Family Video, a privately held company based in the Chicago suburbs, has about 750 video stores around the country.
Green shopping
B. Lime is moving out of its current location just north of downtown Champaign.
Owner Wendi Lindsay said she will continue with the online store and details on her business plans will be forthcoming.
She expected to be out of the space by July.
"We're keeping the online store for sure. I can't give out details on the new space yet," she said.
B. Lime opened in November 2008 in The Hickory Building, 12 E. Washington St., and has sold earth-friendly clothing and other accessories as well as products such as composting pails.
Last fall, Lindsay rearranged the store to focus more on "green" baby items like organic baby mattresses and cloth diapering supplies.
The online store features baby items as well as earth-friendly cleaning products, water bottles and more.
Peace, serenity, etc.
Next weekend marks the grand opening of the Meditation Arts Center in downtown Urbana.
A grand opening celebration is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 123 W. Main St. The center is in the lower level of the Shared Space artist co-op building.
"I know some people think of meditation like taking vitamins. I tried to create a really fun approach for people," said owner Karen Gottlieb.
"The reason I came to meditation is because 20 years ago I was diagnosed with a serious illness" and needed to find peace. "I fell in love with the process, the listening, being open ... finding peace in every moment. ... Each day is its own fabulous discovery," she said.
Gottlieb started offering mediation classes in her home beginning in 2007, followed by workshops at Beads N Botanicals in Urbana and Carle Clinic.
Also an artist, she wandered into the Shared Space basement last year and thought it would make a great place for meditation sessions.
Gottlieb has classes in different forms of guided meditation, such as becoming still, inner listening, joyful expression, exploring artistic expression and customized workshops. She can be reached at meditationarts@gmail.com or 979-2787.
