Danville mayor to offer picks for housing board
DANVILLE – Mayor Scott Eisenhauer will recommend on Tuesday that the city council appoint retired Danville educator Lon Henderson to the Danville Housing Authority's board of commissioners, replacing longtime commissioner Jane Cline.
Eisenhauer also will recommend reappointing commissioner Rick Strebing, who is also a Danville alderman in Ward 2.
Greg Hilleary, executive director of the Danville Housing Authority, said the terms of three commissioners on the housing authority board expire this month – Cline, Strebing and Terry Koebrich.
Tonight's city council agenda does not include any appointment involving Koebrich's seat.
The council meets at 6 p.m. today in the city council chambers at the municipal building, 17 W. Main St., Danville.
Also on the agenda are several items involving the renovation of Carver Park in Danville. The renovation project is currently under way, and the city council will consider approving bids to contractors for the purchase of playground equipment and for masonry, plumbing and carpentry for the park's new concession building.
The Danville Housing Authority board operates independently of city administration and the city council, but housing authority commissioners are appointed by the mayor.
Hilleary said he did not know if Eisenhauer intends to reappoint Koebrich or replace him with a new appointee.
Eisenhauer could not be reached for comment.
Koebrich, who is a public-housing resident, serves on the housing authority board as a resident representative. Hilleary said due to the size of the Danville Housing Authority, it's required by state statute to have one public-housing resident on the board.
Cline, who has served for many years, was a public-housing resident at one time, but after she moved out of public housing, she was appointed as a regular member of the housing authority board, which she still is today.
A longtime educator and Danville resident, Henderson retired from the Danville school district two years ago as the district's director of special education. Henderson could not be reached for comment about his appointment.
And Hilleary said he has not discussed the appointments with Eisenhauer, Henderson or Cline.
Hilleary said he was hoping that the mayor would reappoint Strebing, especially because, in October, Strebing will receive national certification as a commissioner, which is recognition for completing national-level training.
"So I'm very pleased about that," Hilleary said.
Strebing and Henderson would represent the fourth and fifth times in the last few years that Eisenhauer has made appointments to the seven-member board. Like Henderson, the mayor's three previous appointments were all new to the board of commissioners.
They are Vermilion County Assistant State's Attorney Sandy Lawlyes, city Comptroller Gayle Brandon and local businessman Don McLaughlin.
In the last few years, Eisenhauer has been at odds with housing authority administrators about the future direction of the authority.
Eisenhauer has been calling for a reduction in the number of public-housing units and Section 8 vouchers in Danville and for the replacement of older public-housing facilities with new, less dense, more modern housing units.
When Eisenhauer appointed McLaughlin in August 2009, he said that he's looking for appointees to the board of commissioners who share his vision for public housing.
