It's your business: Seven Saints bar to open downtown
Several years of renovation work on two old downtown Champaign stores is nearly finished, and the result – a new bar called Seven Saints – is now expected to open around the first week of April at 32 Chester St.
The latest venture by downtown bar and restaurant operators Carlos and Marco Nieto, Seven Saints has been built in the two neighboring spaces that once housed Johnston's Sports Shop and Dan's Hat Shop.
General manager Johnny Fallon said the name Seven Saints was chosen because it's the Nietos' seventh endeavor and the space has a cathedral-like look with high ceilings.
"It's a great space," he said.
Seven Saints will offer a casual atmosphere, a full bar with tap beers and a full kitchen to serve high-end bar food such as gourmet burgers, salads and appetizers, Fallon said.
It will hold 150 people inside, and a few tables outside in nice weather will be available to accommodate smokers, he said.
News for your sweet tooth
The Dairy Queen at 703 S. Neil St., C, is changing to KaleidoScoops ice cream parlor so it can expand its menu, owner Bhargav Patel said.
Dairy Queen doesn't permit him to sell hard-scoop ice cream, Patel said, and he plans to have 30 different kinds under the conversion to KaleidoScoops, a Wheaton-based co-op with more than 80 locations. Look for the change to be in place at Patel's shop within about a week, he said.
Soft-serve ice cream will remain on the menu, he said.
Also, Jarling's Custard Cup at 309 W. Kirby Ave., C, reopened for the season Friday and is now open from noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Typically Custard Cup reopens the first Friday in March, but with so much snow hanging around Champaign-Urbana, the opening was delayed a week, said manager Sarah Allen.
Seasonal boutique in new location
One Week Boutique, a seasonal business featuring used children's clothing and equipment, has outgrown its space at the Champaign County Fairgrounds and is moving its next sale to the former Best Buy store building at 606 W. Anthony Drive, C, according to owner Donna Pepper.
Started in 2004 with 40 consignment sellers, One Week Boutique grew to 250 sellers last year, and Pepper expects to have 350 sellers at the spring sale April 20-22.
Merchandise includes more than 30,000 used items, including baby, children's and maternity clothing, nursery items, baby equipment and furniture, kids' books, DVDs, videos, software and toys.
Consignment sellers keep 70 percent of what their items sell for, and they can donate their unsold items to a charity. Sellers and volunteers get a chance to shop early.
Hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 20 and 21 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22, with everything selling for half-price the last day.
