It's Your Business: Yogurt shop among signs of spring
It's beginning to look a lot like spring around here.
A new frozen-yogurt shop has opened in Campustown. Kickapoo Landing in Vermilion County has opened for the season, and Urbana's Market at the Square will soon begin.
First, the yogurt shop. Cocomero (it means watermelon) is a frozen yogurt shop that recently opened in the former Moonstruck Chocolate Bar space at 709 S. Wright St., C.
Remodeled with bright orange, lime and white colors, the shop is a serve-yourself kind of place. With a bowl in hand, you choose your yogurt, fill it up with how little or how much yogurt you want, spoon yourself some topping, weigh the bowl and then pay. The store charges by the ounce. Coffee is also available.
The shop has several different flavors and will rotate in two or three new flavors about every month, said one of the owners, Colin Kim. A variety of toppings, from strawberries to Cocoa Puffs, are also available.
This is the first store for Kim and his business partner, James Lee, a UI graduate.
"We went to Arizona, Texas and Florida, but we decided to open here first because James knew this area," Kim said.
He said the location, across from the Alma Mater statue, can't be beat.
They expect to open the second floor, where diners can take in views of campus, for seating soon.
The hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The shop may be open later hours during the summer.
Paddle up
Kickapoo Landing, the boat rental and concession business in Kickapoo State Park, is now open on weekends. On May 15, the business will be open daily through Labor Day weekend.
Kickapoo Landing rents boats for use around Clear Lake, and the business offers canoe and kayak trips along the Middle Fork River. It also sells fishing, camping and water sports supplies.
The business faced closure when former Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced several state park closures last year. After pickets and petition drives, the business was awarded a new lease to operate in the park, which will remain open.
On Fridays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the landing has dinner specials and live music. There is no cover charge for the music.

Market at the Square
One more week until Urbana's Market at the Square begins.
This year's season runs from Saturday, May 2, until Saturday, Nov. 7.
Vendors sell fresh veggies, fruits, baked goods and hand-crafted goods from 7 a.m. to noon at the Lincoln Square parking lot at Illinois and Vine streets.
Shoe, bag repair
Has the recession got you rethinking how you spend your money? Want to try fixing things instead of throwing them out when they show signs of wear or tear?
Cobbler Mikhail Tuniyants has moved his shoe and luggage repair business to Champaign from Sunnycrest Mall in Urbana. He's now located in Suite 104 at 702 Bloomington Road, C. He's open from noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Tuniyants repairs broken heels, patches leather and can alter shoes if you've got one leg longer than the other. He can work on shoes such as Birkenstocks, work boots as well as purses and luggage.
