It's Your Business: Bone Appetit to offer pet treats, clothing

If you're the kind of pet owner who likes to treat your pooch by buying him a baked treat or dressing her in an Illini jersey, you'll want to visit a new pet boutique and bakery.

Bone Appetit Pet Boutique and Bakery in the Round Barn Centre in Champaign will open Aug. 1.

The owner is Jennifer Landheer, who has a pug and a cat. She visited a pet boutique in Decatur and thought the business concept could work here in Champaign-Urbana.

Landheer, who earned a degree in animal science from the University of Illinois, will bake treats in the shop's kitchen. The treats, made without preservatives, will have a shelf life of about a month, she said.

If you want to sample some of the goodies, Landheer will be at the Bark for Life event at Centennial Park on Aug. 15 giving away free samples.

As for the boutique side of the business, she'll sell pet clothing like shirts, dresses and bandanas, as well as various styles of leashes, dishes, dog beds and toy boxes.

"We want to make sure we have good customer service so if we don't have something in the store, we'll find it for our customers," she said.

Dogs are welcome to join you in the store as long as they're on a leash.

The boutique and bakery is at 1912-B Round Barn Road, next to Smoothie King. More information is available by calling 359-BONE or e-mailing boneappetit08@yahoo.com.

The store will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and tentatively from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

New Monticello shop

The Village Wardrobe in Homer, a shop that sells children's consignor clothing, toys and teacher supplies, will open a second store in Monticello.

Kelly Vetter, who co-owns the business with her daughter Kate Boyer, said they hope to open the shop on Aug. 7. It will be on the Monticello square at 111 S. State St.

"Monticello is a beautiful town. It has a lot going for it, and the community has been easy to work with," she said.

The Homer store, at 118 S. Main St., opened in May 2008.

"We were doing so well our first year, we thought, why wait three years? So we said, 'Let's go for it,'" Vetter said.

Like the Homer store, the Monticello shop will carry consignor children's clothing from sizes 0 to 12, plus maternity clothes. The Monticello store, however, will also carry some new clothing.

Other items include Melissa & Doug brand toys and teacher supplies such as arts and crafts and paints.

Summer clothes in the Homer store are currently priced 75 percent off to make room for upcoming fall merchandise. The Monticello store will open with fall clothing.

The Monticello shop will be open the same hours as the Homer store: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Web site is www.villagewardrobe.com. If you're interested in consignment, contact the Homer store at 896-2880.

The shop will also be hiring employees for the Monticello location. More information is available by e-mailing info@villagewardrobe.com.

Second salon open

A Kut Above has opened its second location in Urbana. It is within Meijer, 2500 S. Philo Road. The family-owned salon offers haircuts for women, children and men, plus color treatments, nails and more.

It is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The salon's other location is at 510 N. Cunningham Ave., U, in the shopping center behind Walgreens.

Update on La Gourmandise

La Gourmandise Bistro in Urbana is shifting to summer hours through September.

Starting last week, the hours are as follows: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

German food will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Scavenger hunt

The Tanger Outlet Center in Tuscola has organized a back-to-school scavenger hunt for children.

The hunt starts at 11 a.m. July 26 at the VF Outlet on the east side of the center and is open to children entering kindergarten though eighth grade.

Kids will receive a list of clues and can then search for items such as notebooks, pencils and folders.

The first 400 children will receive a free backpack to hold their items. The giveaway ends at 4 p.m. or while supplies last.

After they have all their clues stamped at the stores, participants will have a chance to win a $250 Tanger gift card.
