It's Your Business: Wines at the Pines plans October opening

The most recent addition to The Pines shopping and dining complex at Windsor and Philo roads in southeast Urbana will be a wine and coffee bar.

Wines at the Pines, 2860 S. Philo Road, is planning an Oct. 23 opening. They'll brew Metropolis coffee, a brand from Chicago, and they'll sell wines by the bottle and the glass, as well as offering wine tastings.

Several years ago, husband and wife Dan Horlander and Jessica Stanis traveled to Sonoma County, Calif., visited wineries and tasting rooms, and fell in love with wine. To learn more, they kept going back to California and traveled overseas.

Over a dinner once, Stanis, a doctoral candidate in neuroscience at the University of Illinois, was asked about her dream job, and she said it would be to run a wine and coffee bar. She and Horlander, who works in information technology at the UI, ended up partnering with Jane Anderson, owner of Milo's restaurant, also located in The Pines, to create Wines at the Pines.

The space, about 1,500 square feet, will feature a bar made from recycled glass and concrete sinks, a seating area for up to 30 people, wines for sale by the bottle, a cellar and deli case.

In addition to selling wine, the owners also plan to stock accessories such as decanters, stemware and gift baskets. They will also sell pastries and sandwiches, baked in Milo's kitchen.

The store will be open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Restaurant openings

Sarku Japan, the teriyaki and sushi chain restaurant, opened in Campustown on Friday.

It's located on the ground floor of the five-story Campus Centre building at 619 S. Wright St., U.

The restaurant has made-to-order sushi and a teppanyaki grill. Sarku Japan has 200 locations across the United States.

Old Chicago, 1910 N. Neil St., C, in the former Smokey Bones restaurant space, is now open. The franchise features pizza, calzones, pasta, stromboli, sandwiches, beer and more. It's open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily and can be reached at 607-1489.

Under new ownership

Longtime neighborhood bar Fallon's Ice House, 703 N. Prospect Ave., C, has been purchased by a new set of owners and is now operating under a new name, The Neighbors at the Ice House.

"It's completely different," said Diane Bennett, who is helping out at the bar and whose daughter, Stephanie Bennett, is the manager.

It's now a full-service bar, she said, with 96 different kinds of liquor available, as well as draft beer, plus several domestic and imported beers available in bottles.

So far the bathrooms have been completely remodeled and windows on the second story have been replaced; in the next month, the windows on the first floor will be replaced. New flooring and painting is also planned, she said.

The hours are the same, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The bar plans to sponsor local sports teams and become more involved in fundraising. Currently the bar is collecting toiletries, stationery and other goods for veterans.

"We want to concentrate on giving back to the community, especially the one our bar sits in," Bennett said.
