It's Your Business: Ex-Baker's Square site going Asian
An Asian restaurant is expected to open early next year in the former Baker's Square building near Market Place Mall in Champaign.
Ginger Asian Bistro, 1902 Center Drive, will feature Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean food when it opens.
The owners are shooting for a February opening, said Steve Zhao, who owns a majority stake in Brothers LLC, the Springfield-based firm developing the restaurant.
Zhao said the Champaign restaurant is not affiliated with the Springfield restaurant that bears the same name.
Earlier this fall, the group obtained a building permit from the city of Champaign for $41,000 worth of work.
"We're totally renovating the place, putting in Asian-style marble on the floor and walls, and the restaurant will also have a sushi bar," he said.
The restaurant, across from Market Place Mall and north of La Quinta Inn, was home to a Baker's Square from 2002 until April 2008, when the chain's owner closed several locations around the country. Prior to Baker's Square, it was a Denny's.
Mall updates
Complete Nutrition, which sells health, weight-loss and sports-nutrition items, is now open in the Sears wing of Market Place Mall. The store is open during mall hours and can be reached at 355-1447.
A grand opening celebration with sales and other promotions is planned for January.
Several new seasonal kiosks, such as Flesor's Candy Kitchen and Sheepskin Boots and Gifts, are up and running.
One of the most recent seasonal kiosk additions in the mall is Tees for Dolls and Me, which sells doll clothes and accessories for 18-inch dolls as well as shirts for the dolls' owners. Here you can shop for matching T-shirts (such as custom rhinestone T-shirts) for girls, women and their dolls.
The holiday marketplace by the children's play area also features stands that sell jewelry, Pampered Chef products, baked goods and items for birders.
