It's Your Business: Ex-Baker's Square site going Asian

An Asian restaurant is expected to open early next year in the former Baker's Square building near Market Place Mall in Champaign.

Ginger Asian Bistro, 1902 Center Drive, will feature Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean food when it opens.

The owners are shooting for a February opening, said Steve Zhao, who owns a majority stake in Brothers LLC, the Springfield-based firm developing the restaurant.

Zhao said the Champaign restaurant is not affiliated with the Springfield restaurant that bears the same name.

Earlier this fall, the group obtained a building permit from the city of Champaign for $41,000 worth of work.

"We're totally renovating the place, putting in Asian-style marble on the floor and walls, and the restaurant will also have a sushi bar," he said.

The restaurant, across from Market Place Mall and north of La Quinta Inn, was home to a Baker's Square from 2002 until April 2008, when the chain's owner closed several locations around the country. Prior to Baker's Square, it was a Denny's.

Mall updates

Complete Nutrition, which sells health, weight-loss and sports-nutrition items, is now open in the Sears wing of Market Place Mall. The store is open during mall hours and can be reached at 355-1447.

A grand opening celebration with sales and other promotions is planned for January.

Several new seasonal kiosks, such as Flesor's Candy Kitchen and Sheepskin Boots and Gifts, are up and running.

One of the most recent seasonal kiosk additions in the mall is Tees for Dolls and Me, which sells doll clothes and accessories for 18-inch dolls as well as shirts for the dolls' owners. Here you can shop for matching T-shirts (such as custom rhinestone T-shirts) for girls, women and their dolls.

The holiday marketplace by the children's play area also features stands that sell jewelry, Pampered Chef products, baked goods and items for birders.

Cerro Gordo event

Several businesses in the Piatt County town of Cerro Gordo will celebrate Christmas on the Hill throughout the day on Saturday.

Restaurants and retailers, including T's Video and Tan, 207 E. South St. – which earlier this year expanded to include a nail salon called T's Nails – will have open houses and be offering various specials throughout the day Dec. 5.

Store grand opening

C Plus Etc., 71 E. Chester St., C, will have a grand opening beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The store, which sells new and consignment plus-size clothing and accessories, will have a buy-one, get-one half-off sale all week on specially tagged items. There will also be refreshments.

In addition to the clothing and accessories for sale, the store is offering alteration services for women and men of all sizes. Owner Carrie Freeze said the store also will feature custom design and sewing services, such as custom-made special occasion gowns.

The store is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and can be reached at 954-0877.

Graphic design

Terry Neutz Hayden of White Heath has decided to return full time to her business Graphic Innovations. In recent years, Hayden has worked as a director of publications, art director and director of communications at places such as the University of Illinois and Sports Publishing.

She has designed posters, banners and other marketing materials, started branding campaigns and organized photo shoots, among other projects. She works with companies of all sizes. She can be reached at 493-4169, via e-mail at terrynhayden@yahoo.com or through her Web site, www.graphicinnovationsonline.com.

World Harvest anniversary

World Harvest, 519 E. University Ave., C, will celebrate its 10th anniversary throughout December. Owner Mohammad Al-Heeti said the international and gourmet food shop will have daily food tastings from Dec. 4 through Dec. 13.

For two Saturdays, Dec. 5 and 12, there will be expanded tastings and representatives from some of World Harvest's food company suppliers will be there.

Drawings for gift certificates, T-shirts and other prizes will be held. Holiday items and gift baskets are also available. The store is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. A new Web site, www.worldharvestfoods.com, now allows visitors to buy online.
