Changes ahead for Champaign restaurant

CHAMPAIGN -- Changes are coming to downtown Champaign restaurant Jim Gould.

The music will include more roots-rock and reggae and the interior paint colors will be updated, but most notable is the fact that the Jim Gould behind Jim Gould restaurant is no longer with the business, according to Cody Sokolski, spokesman for Champaign Downtown Restaurant Association, the partnership that owns the restaurant.

Sokolski is also a developer of the five-story One Main Plaza where Jim Gould opened in 2005 as well as a developer of the nine-story M2 on Neil project across the street.

Sokolski declined to name his other partner in the restaurant. The third was Gould.

"It was an amicable separation. ... Jim and Tanya (his wife) started the business with numerous children at home, now they have one child at home. It seemed like a good time for them to simplify and downsize their life," Sokolski said.

The ownership change happened a month ago, he said.

Staffing the restaurant employs about 40 people has not changed, he said.

And the name is also going to stay, at least for now.

"For now, we're going to continue to carry forward the good tradition of the name," Sokolski said. "We're very excited. The partners are really engaged in the kitchen and the front of the house."

As for possible changes, the menu may be shortened a bit. And staff gradually will update the restaurant's interior colors, doing away with the green-and-brown theme. Red paint has replaced the light-green-colored trim. Music will switch from Tony Bennett songs to those by musicians like Curtis Mayfield, Crowded House, The Shins and Aretha Franklin.

"I hope the tweaks will be subtle," Sokolski said. "In six months we will reclaim the number-one fine dining spot in Champaign."

Prior to opening the downtown Champaign restaurant, Jim Gould opened Biaggi's in Champaign and was a manager at Jumer's Castle Lodge in Urbana. Gould could not be reached for comment.
