The University of Illinois was one of 37 original land-grant institutions. It was chartered in 1867 as the Illinois Industrial University and opened in 1868. Its flagship campus is in Urbana-Champaign, and it also has campuses in Chicago and Springfield with medical centers in Peoria and Rockford. Here is some information about the local campus:
