Bond set at $5 million for woman involved in I-74 accident

URBANA – A woman charged in connection with a three-vehicle accident Friday on Interstate 74 that killed one person and injured three others remained in jail Saturday night.

Champaign County Judge Michael Jones set bond at $5 million Saturday morning for Elizabeth Drewes, 53, of the 1000 block of Churchill Downs Drive, Champaign.

Drewes was arrested Friday on preliminary charges of aggravated driving under the influence. She was booked into the Champaign County Jail late Friday afternoon.

State police said the accident happened about 1 p.m. Friday after Drewes began driving her Cadillac Escalade west in the eastbound lanes of I-74 at Lincoln Avenue in Urbana.

About a quarter-mile west of the exit, her vehicle hit a minivan head-on, killing 24-year-old passenger Brittany Babb and seriously injuring Miss Babb's fiance, Zachary Acton, who was driving. Acton was listed in serious condition Saturday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

A driver and passenger in a third vehicle that then hit Drewes' vehicle were treated at Carle and released.

Drewes was also ticketed for going the wrong way on the highway, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving without insurance.

At a bond hearing Saturday morning, State's Attorney Julia Rietz said that witnesses pulled Drewes from her vehicle, which caught fire after it hit Acton's minivan. Drewes was not injured in the crash, Rietz said.

Officers noted Drewes displayed signs of impairment such as bloodshot eyes and a strong order of alcohol. Drewes also stumbled as she walked, was combative to officers and made a fist. An officer grabbed her wrist to avoid being punched by Drewes, Rietz said.

Drewes reportedly had been drinking vodka earlier in the day, Rietz said.

Police had also been looking for Drewes in an ongoing unrelated case, she said.

Drewes allegedly left a profane-filled and threatening message to her financial adviser earlier in the day. The woman reported the message to the police, who then began looking for Drewes.

Drewes had allegedly made unwanted advances toward her financial adviser to initiate a relationship with her, Rietz said.

Drewes declined medical treatment and refused to submit to a chemical test, and police are waiting for results from an involuntary blood and urine sample.

Though Drewes has no prior convictions, she does have a pending driving-under-the-influence charge from a Sept. 30 arrest on Interstate 57 near Thomasboro. She was scheduled to appear in court on that charge Tuesday.

Rietz told the court that the Sept. 30 accident was a single-car accident and police found Drewes in her Cadillac Escalade off the roadway.

In that accident, Drewes told police that she didn't know what happened and that she was on her way to see her therapist, Rietz said.

Police noted that Drewes' vehicle showed damage consistent with an accident, Rietz said. Officers also noted that Drewes had a strong order of alcohol and her speech was slurred.

Drewes denied drinking, but a voluntary Breathalyzer test showed that her blood alcohol content was 0.317. A subsequent blood test showed that Drewes had a blood alcohol content of 0.31.

According to state law, a driver who has a minimum blood alcohol level of 0.08 is considered impaired.

During Drewes' bond hearing, Reitz said that the police and fire departments had been called out seven times since Sept. 22 to Drewes' home on reports that she was intoxicated or impaired and either had injured herself or was going to injure herself.

She was involuntarily admitted to the hospital on Nov. 7.

In requesting a high bond, Reitz said that Drewes was a risk to the community and that they understood she was financially well-off.

During Saturday morning's bond hearing, Drewes told the judge that while she had her vehicle insured in both the Sept. 30 and Friday's accidents, she did not have proof of insurance.

Prosecutors are checking the status of Drewes' driver's license, Reitz said, which should have been suspended after the Sept. 30 accident.

Drewes is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday's charges on Monday afternoon.
