Coroner IDs Texas man killed after police chase
OAKWOOD – The Vermilion County coroner has identified the man fatally shot by area police near Oakwood on Monday night.
Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said that Ocuwatofumi O. Kaiyewu, 23, of Missouri City, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:10 a.m.
Illinois State Police are heading up the investigation into the shooting that occurred just before 11 p.m. on Interstate 74 following a three-county pursuit.
A joint news release from Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh, Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn and University of Illinois Police Chief Barbara O'Connor said several officers fired on Mr. Kaiyewu in self-defense after he got out of a car with a machete and a knife.
Illinois State Police Sgt. Bill Emery said a Villa Grove police officer stopped Mr. Kaiyewu in a silver Toyota about 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of Illinois 130 and East Harrison Street.
Villa Grove Police Chief Dennis Gire said in a written release that Mr. Kaiyewu displayed "unusual behavior" and tried to hit the officer with his car as he tried to leave the scene.
Villa Grove police then chased the car north on Illinois 130, which went through Champaign and Vermilion counties, he said.
Champaign County sheriff's deputies, UI police and Vermilion County deputies all joined in the pursuit and were apparently present when Mr. Kaiyewu's car was stopped by "stop sticks," designed to flatten car tires, on I-74 near Oakwood.
The release said the man got out of his car with a knife and a machete and began to swing the machete at the officers.
In response, police fired Tasers at him, but when those didn't stop him, they fired their weapons. The man died at the scene.
Officers involved in the pursuit and shooting have been put on administrative leave while state police investigate, a standard practice of all the departments.
Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Allen Jones said three Champaign County deputies were present and are now off.
UI spokeswoman Robin Kaler said a canine officer from the UI police was also involved and is on leave. He was summoned, she said, because authorities believed during the pursuit there was a chance the man might try to run.
"Our officer joined simply to be ready for that eventuality," she said.
Emery could not say how many Vermilion County deputies were present at the time of the shooting. State troopers were at the scene after the shooting to provide traffic control, he said.
