Man's vehicle leaves Interstate 57, sinks in pond

TUSCOLA – An Edgewood man died Monday afternoon when his car left Interstate 57 near Tuscola and was submerged in a pond beside the highway.

Sgt. Bill Emery of the Illinois State Police said Calvin Jones, 84, died before two Douglas County sheriff's deputies and two Tuscola firefighters were able to pull his body out of the water.

According to a state police report, police received a 911 call at 1:10 p.m. about a car in a pond.

Emery said the car had been headed south on Interstate 57 and left the road, crashed through a fence and landed in a pond near milepost 213.

"By the time we got to the scene, the car and its driver had been submerged in the pond," Emery said. "Two Douglas County deputies and two Tuscola firemen entered the water to try to get him out, but he didn't make it."

Emery said an autopsy will be performed on Mr. Jones' body today at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

Emery said the car had also been removed from the pond, and state police crime scene personnel were investigating the incident.
