Investigators looking for cause of Jamaica house fire

JAMAICA – The I&I Fire Investigation Team was investigating the cause of a Wednesday afternoon fire that caused significant damage to a home in Jamaica.

Sidell Fire Chief Terry Bates said the I&I investigators would be joined by investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office today.

Bates said firefighters were called to a fire at a single-story home at the corner of Prairie and Jordan streets in Jamaica at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sidell Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from the Fairmount, Indianola, Catlin, Oakwood and Allerton fire departments.

When firefighters arrived at 12:53 p.m., they saw smoke coming out of the rear of the house, Bates said.

Nobody was at home. Bates wouldn't release the name of the people who lived there or the owner of the house.

Bates said firefighters had the fire under control by 1:05 p.m. Firefighters left the scene by 4 p.m., Bates said.

No firefighters were injured.

Bates said the house sustained heavy smoke and fire damage in the kitchen area.

"We believe the fire started in the kitchen, but we haven't yet determined a cause," Bates said.

There was also heavy smoke damage in an adjoining bedroom and living room.

Bates said the I&I Fire Investigation Team was investigating the cause of the fire, with investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office expected to be there on Thursday.
