Royal man loses control of car, lands in ditch
OGDEN – A Royal man was released from Carle Foundation Hospital on Thursday afternoon after crashing his car into a ditch in eastern Champaign County earlier in the day.
Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Keith Cunningham said Christopher Huls was not seriously injured but had ice-cold water rushing into his car after running into a ditch off County Road 2100 N about 9:40 a.m.
Cunningham said Huls, whose age he didn't have, suffers from a medical disorder that caused him to lose control of the car, run off the north side of the road through corn stubble, and down an 18- to 20-foot-deep ditch that had about 3 feet of water in it.
Cunningham said Huls was fortunate that someone saw the accident and got help for him immediately because the ditch is far enough off the road that a passer-by might not have seen it. Cunningham said the water was filling the floorboard of Huls' car, so he was taken to Carle to be checked out.
The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
