Woman charged earlier with DUI arrested for theft
URBANA — A Champaign woman awaiting trial on charges of causing the death of another woman in a drunken-driving crash pleaded innocent Monday to an additional charge of theft.
Amanda Ennis, 31, who listed an address in Champaign, was arrested for theft under $300 after police say she stole a bottle of Xylocaine from Carle Clinic, 1701 W. Curtis Rd., Champaign, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Larson.
Ennis is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana in connection with the Jan. 22 death of Susan Costello, 58, of Champaign.
Mrs. Costello died from injuries after being struck by a car as she crossed Kirby Avenue near Hessel Park in Champaign.
Court records indicate Ennis, who police say was driving the car that hit Mrs. Costello, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12 percent at the time. In Illinois, a motorist is presumed to be intoxicated if he or she has 0.08 percent.
Ennis’ next appearance on the DUI case is set for April 30. Judge John Kennedy set Ennis’ next appearance in the theft case for May 14.
