Teen charged in attack on bicyclist
URBANA — A Champaign teen has been charged with robbery in connection with a street mugging in north Champaign early Tuesday.
State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said Johnnie Campbell, 17, who listed an address in the 1900 block of Diana Lane, was arrested about 12:40 a.m. after he was seen on a bicycle that had been stolen about 12:30 a.m. from a man in the 700 block of Vine Street.
Rietz said the 23-year-old Champaign man told police he was riding his bike on Vine when he passed five men standing on the corner. One of the men told the victim to give him his bike but the man kept riding.
One of the muggers then came up behind him, pulled him off his bike, and began punching him. The other four men also joined in hitting the victim in the face, Rietz said. The victim sustained a chipped tooth.
One of the five then rode off on the bike while the other four got in a car and took off.
Rietz said police found Campbell within minutes not far away on the bike. He told police another man gave it to him, she said.
Police brought Campbell to the victim, who identified him as one of his attackers and the person who took his bike.
In December, Campbell was acquitted of aggravated criminal sexual assault in connection with a March 6, 2009, attack on a 16-year-old who was dating him. He and four others were charged with raping her in a detached garage at Campbell’s home. One of the men was convicted.
Robbery is a Class 2 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison upon conviction.
