Teens charged with burglary
URBANA — Two Urbana teens are due back in court in early May after being charged Monday with residential burglary.
Urbana police Friday arrested Davon McDonald, 17, of the 1000 block of Fairlawn Avenue, and Naquombe Johnson, 17, of the 1000 block of South Smith Road, after the two showed up at their school with money and an electronic game that they didn’t have when they were at school earlier.
Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said a witness saw two young men leaving a house in the 600 block of North Broadway Avenue around 10:20 a.m. Morgan said the burglars apparently entered through an unlocked window.
The witness identified one of the youths as knowing the victim. Police went to Circle Academy where the two are in school and found the stolen Game Boy and $9.75 that had been taken in the break-in. They were arrested just before noon.
Both men were ordered to be back in court May 4. Johnson’s bond was set at $5,000. McDonald’s was set at $50,000. If convicted, the teens face a mandatory prison term of four to 15 years.
McDonald is awaiting trial for burglary for allegedly stealing items stored backstage by people participating in the Jan. 17 Martin Luther King celebration at the Krannert Center in Urbana. He was out on bond in that case.
He was told that any sentence for the more recent burglary would have to be served after any he receives if he is convicted of the Krannert incident.
