Fire destroys garage on rural property near Melvin
MELVIN — Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of an early-morning fire that destroyed a garage on a rural property east of Melvin Wedneday.
The garage was fully engulfed when about 35 firefighters from three volunteer departments responded to the blaze at a property owned by former Ford County Board member Jim Kietzman around 4 a.m., according to Larry Boundy, chief of the Roberts-Melvin Fire Protection District.
The property is located at 1050 N. Illinois 115, about 3 miles east of Melvin. The one-story, metal garage, containing cars and a tractor, was a total loss, Boundy said, and so were its contents.
Boundy said he is not sure how the fire started. No one was home at the time, he said. Boundy said his department continues to investigate.
The Roberts-Melvin Fire Protection District brought six trucks to the scene, while Buckley brought three and Loda brought two. Firefighters remained on scene until about 8 a.m., Boundy said.
