Monticello Police looking for "person of interest" in bank robbery
MONTICELLO – Monticello police have released a sketch of the person they believe may know something about bank robberies in that city and in Mahomet.
Monticello Police Chief John Miller said the sketch of the "person of interest" was done by a forensic artist with the Illinois State Police.
"It's someone we need to talk to about the bank robberies. We need to find out who they are and interview them and then maybe we'll know more," said Miller.
On Wednesday, Dec. 16, the First State Bank in downtown Monticello was robbed about 9:30 a.m. and on Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Busey Bank at 312 E. Main St. in Mahomet was robbed.
In both cases the robber was armed with a black semiautomatic pistol. He was described as a white man about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, in his late 30s or early 40s.
Miller said the Federal Bureau of Investigation has told police that the robber in both holdups is likely the same person.
In Monticello, the bank is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the holdup. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
In the Mahomet bank robbery, Champaign County Crimestoppers is offering a reward.
Anyone with information on who this person might be should call the Monticello police department at 217-762-2121; Mahomet police at 217-586-5533; the FBI office at 217-352-0411; or Champaign County Crimestoppers at 217-373-8477.
