Man faces up to 14 years for burglary

URBANA – An Urbana man convicted of burglary faces up to 14 years in prison when he's sentenced next month.

A Champaign County jury Friday convicted Joseph Hairston, 18, of the 200 block of East Washington Street, of burglary for entering the Meijer Store at 2401 N. Prospect Ave., C, on Dec. 17, intending to steal.

Testimony at his trial before Judge Tom Difanis was that Hairston was in the store almost an hour selecting items. Security officers were watching him, and when they saw him and his girlfriend go in the women's bathroom with merchandise they hadn't paid for, they decided to stop them.

Assistant State's Attorney Duke Harris said police found Hairston had under $200 worth of merchandise, including liquor, CDs, candy and a backpack. He told an officer that another man had offered him $300 to shoplift.

Because Hairston was on probation for 2009 convictions for burglary and possession of a stolen car, he faces a mandatory prison term of between three and 14 years.

Difanis set sentencing for April 26.
