Sheriff's office says Urbana man's death apparent suicide
URBANA — Champaign County sheriff’s deputies are treating the death of an Urbana man found by train tracks north of Champaign as an apparent suicide.
Capt. Tim Voges said a man found about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday along the north-south railroad tracks just north of Leverett Road was identified as Daniel Schreiber, 24, a University of Illinois graduate student from Palo Alto, Calif.
Voges said his body was discovered by employees on a northbound train, a few hundred yards north of Leverett Road. It’s believed he was hit by another train that passed earlier, Voges said.
Lt. Ed Ogle said Mr. Schreiber’s last known local address was on Busey Avenue in Urbana but investigators were not sure he still lived there.
Mr. Schreiber was featured in a News-Gazette story last fall about his production of his own chocolate. His company was called Flatlander Chocolate.
He was a graduate student in computer science, who had just celebrated his 24th birthday on Saturday.
It's regrettable that the sheriff's deputies even mentioned "apparent suicide" and worse that this report brings it up. Until an investigation finishes you shouldn't be disclosing details like this. It's just wrong. And it's unethical for the News Gazette to print. It's clear you don't really even have facts like where he lived. Wouldn't you think it wise to gather the facts before putting a story out? Shame on both of you.
All those who knew Dan cannot believe his death is being discussed in this way at this time. He showed no signs of depression, had plans for the future and has been an active member of the community for many years. He will be remembered by many and is an inspiration to many more.
Agree with the above, an investigation remains to be conducted and evidence continues to mount that this was a tragic accident. The News Gazette, the sheriff's office or both should be ashamed of releasing information like this, almost certainly without the family's consent.
It does seem odd that this sort of information would be printed without a full investigation. It is hurtful to both family and friends. I hope that there is a full investigation. I have never seen any aspect of this young man's personality to indicate him being capable of suicide.
I'm really interested to read these comments because while I never knew this guy I was interested about his product after reading this story, and the more I read about him, the less the claim made in the article made sense to me. The reporting itself seems sketchy, but I sure hope the Sheriff's department does more.

While I did not know Dan, I have been mourning his loss. Sadly, I lost my 27 year old brother under eerily similar circumstances last summer. We also had to listen to reports of "apparent suicide". When more facts were revealed it was determined to be a tragic accident. In the end, none of it brought my brother back. He was handsome, kind and aspiring to greatness. So much of my story reminds me of what I've read about Dan and I am so sad for his family and their loss. My deepest sympathy.
I understand how confused and sad his friends and family must be by this report. I lost my brother in March to suicide and he showed absolutely no signs of depression or of any intention to leave us. The shock and disbelief still remain. How could his wife and children not be enough to keep him on this Earth? We'll never know. Daniel H. Schreiber, rest in peace. And may all be forgiven.
