Champaign man faces drug, ammunition charges
URBANA – A Champaign man has been charged with possessing drugs intended for sale and handgun ammunition he wasn't supposed to have.
Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Darrell D. Allen, 26, who listed an address in the 900 block of Berwick Drive, was arrested Wednesday at his home after Urbana and Champaign police drug investigators served a search warrant at his home and found cocaine.
The search warrant was obtained after someone working with police made a controlled buy, Morgan said.
In the house, police found 5.3 grams of cocaine powder, drug paraphernalia and handgun ammunition. Police found more than $1,700 cash on Allen. Because of previous felony convictions for violation of bail bond and unlawful use of weapons by a felon, Allen is not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition.
Judge John Kennedy arraigned Allen on Thursday on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and unlawful possession of firearm ammunition and set his bond at $15,000. If convicted of the more serious drug charge, Allen faces a mandatory prison term of four to 15 years.
