Call to police about domestic disturbance leads to arrest in two-year-old case
URBANA – A call about a domestic disturbance in Mahomet on Thursday morning led police to the arrest of a man in connection with an unrelated armed robbery and kidnapping two years ago in Champaign.
Bond was set at $100,000 Thursday for Lewis M. Neal, 31, whose address was listed as unknown.
Neal was charged with felony armed robbery and felony aggravated kidnapping. No plea will be made until an appearance by Neal's lawyer.
Judge Harry Clem set Neal's next court appearance for Aug. 26.
Mahomet Police Chief Jerry Gamble said Mahomet police were called to a reported domestic disturbance outside the Heritage Inn Motel, 801 Eastwood Dr., on Thursday morning.
Gamble said Neal's girlfriend, who did not cooperate with police, had been yelling at Neal. By the time police arrived, Neal had driven away.
While police were at the motel, they got a report of an accident on the Oak Street bridge near Illinois 47. When they got to the bridge, the car was no longer there, but officers found car parts from the accident.
Gamble said police found the car near the Andersons elevator on U.S. 150, with Neal near the car. Police arrested Neal for leaving the scene of an accident.
Gamble said a computer search then showed that Neal was wanted for an incident in Champaign in 2008.
According to a Champaign police report, a 34-year-old man who knew Neal was following Neal to his home to visit when his vehicle collided with Neal's on the evening of March 31, 2008.
When Neal drove on, the 34-year-old man followed him to a home near Kirby and Mattis avenues, police said.
At the home, Neal opened the door, pulled the 34-year-old man into the garage, showed him the damage to his vehicle and demanded money, according to Champaign Police spokeswoman Rene Dunn.
When the 34-year-old man protested, Neal then allegedly pulled a gun, cocked it, and threatened him, police said.
Then Neal beat him with the gun, pushed him into the trunk of the car and closed the lid, police said.
According to the report, a woman later came out of the home, and the lid of the trunk was opened. The woman helped Neal blindfold the 34-year-old man and helped tie him up with a cord. The man was later pushed back into the trunk of a car, and the lid was closed. After the car was driven around for a few minutes, the 34-year-old man was pulled out of the trunk and told to get out.
The victim got back in his own car and drove away. He later realized that his wallet, with money, had been stolen during the incident, the report said.
