Two from Arcola facing cocaine charge
TUSCOLA – A man and woman from Arcola have been charged with having nearly 2 ounces of cocaine intended for sale.
A release from the East Central Illinois Task Force said Juan Vargas, 27, and Bertha DeLa Garza, 31, were arrested Aug. 10 after a traffic stop in Arcola.
A search of Vargas' vehicle was done after an Arcola police dog reacted to the presence of narcotics. The search turned up 59 grams of cocaine with a street value of about $5,900.
Douglas County State's Attorney Kevin Nolan said he charged Vargas and DeLa Garza with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a Class X felony carrying potential penalties ranging from six to 30 years in prison upon conviction.
The task force, made up of the Coles County Sheriff's Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Department, Moultrie County Sheriff's Department, Arcola Police Department, Charleston Police Department, Eastern Illinois University Police Department, Mattoon Police Department and the Illinois State Police, had been investigating Vargas during July.
Vargas has a Sept. 1 court date while De La Garza is scheduled to appear Aug. 30. Both remained in the Douglas County Jail Tuesday.
