Crimestoppers focuses on campus attacks
CHAMPAIGN – Champaign police and Crimestoppers are seeking information regarding aggravated batteries in the campus area.
About 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, officers were breaking up a disorderly crowd of about 100 men and woman in the 500 block of East Green Street when they saw a man fall to the street, apparently unconscious.
A female witness said the man had been battered by four men who came up behind them. As they walked, one began poking the victim in the back of the head. A second man then came up behind the victim and hit him in the back of the head with a fist.
The victim continued walking, trying to get out of the crowd, when a third man approached, again striking the victim in the back of the head with a fist, knocking him to the ground. A fourth man then approached the victim, grabbed a light post with his hand, reared back, and kicked the victim in the head. The victim fell into the street, unconscious. He later regained consciousness but had suffered a lump on his head, a cut on his forehead, and possibly a broken nose. He was taken to a local emergency room for treatment.
The four attackers are described as:
– Black male, about 25, 5 feet 5 inches tall, about 140 pounds, with black "clipper-shaved" hair, brown eyes, wearing a plaid blue shirt and blue jeans, and had a lip piercing.
– Black male, about 22, 6 feet tall, about 185 pounds, short black hair, brown eyes, wearing either a white baseball cap with a small green insignia on the front or a dark baseball cap with white and green on the front, a white T-shirt, and blue jeans. He had a dark tattoo with an unknown design and no obvious color on his left forearm.
– Black male, about 25, 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 160 pounds, black hair in two-inch long braids, brown eyes, and wearing a red baseball cap, white T-shirt, and blue jeans.
– Black male, about 25, 6 feet, about 250 pounds, black hair in three-inch corn rows, brown eyes, wearing a white T-shirt with a thin, shiny multi-colored logo on the front and blue jeans.
The second and fourth attackers were possibly later seen in a gray Chevrolet Caprice.
A similar incident occurred about 2:37 a.m. on Aug. 27.
Two men were walking, one in front of the other, in the 300 block of East Green Street, when three men walked past them. The first of the two men heard a thud and when he turned around, saw his friend lying unconscious on the ground. The other three men continued to walk away.
The unconscious man was taken to Provena Covenant Medical Center. It was initially thought he fell and hit his head. However, medical personnel stated that his injuries were not consistent with a fall. The victim had redness on his left ear and a bump behind it, and also had a bump on the right side of his head with several abrasions on his forehead. It's thought he may have been hit on the left ear area and fell, causing the injuries to the right side of his head.
The victim later regained consciousness, but remembers nothing about how he was injured. He suffered a fractured skull.
The men had no specific description of the three attackers.
