Victims of crash on Illinois 16 identified

WINDSOR – Illinois State police have released the names of two men killed when their semitrailer trucks collided in Shelby County Monday afternoon.

They were identified as Harold Keck, 70, of Mascoutah, a passenger in one of the trucks, and James L. Painter, 49, of Teutopolis, the driver of a second.

Police said the collision occurred about 12:25 p.m. when James W. Adair, 65, of Troy, who was driving southwest on Illinois 16, tried to pass a car that was stopped in front of him.

Adair went into the path of Mr. Painter’s truck as he headed northeast on 16.

Both trucks overturned and came to rest in a ditch on the east side of Illinois 16. Mr. Keck had been wearing a seat belt but was thrown from Adair’s truck. Mr. Painter’s truck caught fire and he died inside.

Adair was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center near Mattoon for treatment.

The road was blocked for several hours. Adair was ticketed for improper passing on the left.
