Former UI student sentenced for child porn

URBANA – A Rochelle man who admitted possessing child pornography when he was a resident of a dormitory on the University of Illinois campus has been sentenced to probation.

Nicholas Rosenwinkel, 23, will also have to serve 90 days in jail and register as a sex offender.

He pleaded guilty Tuesday before Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis to possession of child pornography, admitting that he had downloaded images to his computer at the Hendrick House, 904 W. Green St., U, where he was living last year.

Urbana police said employees of the dormitory found file names suggestive of child pornography on a file capable of being shared by other dorm residents and alerted authorities in September.

Police got a search warrant for his computer on Sept. 12 and located the pornography. Rosenwinkel admitted he had been viewing it for about four years, police said.

Rosenwinkel's attorney, Ed Piraino of Champaign, said Rosenwinkel was suspended from the UI following his arrest. He was a senior in electrical engineering who has since enrolled in another school.

He will be on probation for 30 months. Difanis agreed to let him begin serving his jail sentence May 23 so he can finish his current school semester.
