$1 million bond in DUI case against Philo man
URBANA – A Philo man with a history of drunken driving convictions has been charged with another after leading police on a daylight pursuit through Urbana Monday morning.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz said a concerned citizen saw an obviously intoxicated Shawn Bahrs, 46, get in his van in Philo about 10:30 a.m. and followed him until a sheriff's deputy tried to stop him in east Urbana near the Wal-Mart.
Rietz said Bahrs went in the wrong lane of traffic on Illinois 130 as he headed north, forcing several people off the road with his erratic driving.
Deputies eventually arrested Bahrs on Bradley near Lincoln after he ran his van into a snow drift. Deputies found open alcohol in the van and took Bahrs to Carle Foundation Hospital because he was so drunk. He refused to be tested, she said.
Rietz said Bahrs was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated fleeing and driving under revocation.
Because of his prior convictions, including four for DUI, and a residential burglary for which he is currently on parole, Bahrs faces a mandatory prison term of six to 60 years, she said.
He also has an aggravated DUI case pending in Douglas County, where he is supposed to be in court Feb. 16.
Judge John Kennedy set his bond on the Champaign County case at $1 million and ordered him back in court March 15.
