Body pulled from Lake Mingo identified as Westville man
WESTVILLE -- An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday morning for a Westville man whose body was pulled from a lake Tuesday at Kennekuk County Park in Vermilion County.
Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said Larry D. Anderson, 57, of Westville was pronounced dead on Tuesday. The Vermilion County Sheriff Department’s search and rescue team recovered his body from Lake Mingo at Kennekuk Park where he had gone to ice fish, according to Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn.
Hartshorn said Mr. Anderson would ice fish frequently and left his house Monday morning for Kennekuk County Park.
When he didn’t return later that day, his wife got worried and about 8 p.m., she called to report him missing, Hartshorn said.
Deputies found his car parked near Lake Mingo at Kennekuk Park on Monday night, Hartshorn said, and began searching the area on foot in the dark. They searched until midnight, he said, and called it off until first light Tuesday when the search and rescue team began searching the ice on Lake Mingo, which was difficult because it was breaking up.
Deputies found a site on the lake that had some fishing equipment and a coat, and they brought the items back to the shore where family members identified them as Mr. Anderson’s.
At that point, Hartshorn said, divers went under the ice at that same spot and found an ice auger that’s used to drill a hole in the ice. From that point, they based their search pattern on that spot, he said, assuming the auger had fallen straight to the bottom. The team recovered his body about 2 p.m., Hartshorn said.
