Police chase in Indiana stops short of Illinois line near Danville

FOUNTAIN COUNTY, Ind. – A chase on Interstate 74 stopped short of the Illinois border on Tuesday when Indiana State Police arrested a man who allegedly shot at a semitrailer and is also suspected in a shooting last week on Interstate 80 in northern Indiana.

At about 2:31 p.m. Tuesday, police spotted a Dodge Charger heading west on Interstate 74 in Montgomery County, Ind., that matched the description of a car involved in a shooting on Interstate 80 last week, according to Indiana State Police.

In that incident Thursday night near Merrillville, Ind., the driver of a Dodge Charger sedan was flashing his lights when he sped up behind another vehicle, pulled alongside and fired several times at the vehicle, injuring one of the adults inside, according to police.

A Fountain County sheriff's deputy and Crawfordsville police officer started the pursuit of the Dodge Charger on Tuesday afternoon. During the chase, a 2008 Freightliner semitrailer that was also westbound on I-74 was shot at and hit twice by the person in the Charger, but the driver of the semi was not injured, according to state police.

Stop sticks were placed along I-74 by the Fountain County Sheriff's Department at a spot about 10 miles east of the Illinois border.

The Charger's front tire blew when it crossed the stop sticks, and the driver lost control and went off the road into a tree line. The driver ran from the car into a wooded area, and a perimeter was set up.

The Indiana State Police Central Emergency Response Team and Trooper Jon Eads and his K-9 Nico found the man hiding in water and also found a weapon.

The suspect, Aaron Di Shon Windom, 25, of Michigan City, Ind., was taken to a hospital in Crawfordsville and was treated for hyperthermia, according to state police.

Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said Danville police, Vermilion County sheriff's deputies and Illinois State Police were waiting near the Illinois border in case the chase crossed into Vermilion County. A Danville police K-9 unit and SWAT team members were on their way to help in the search for the man, Thomason said, when Indiana authorities reported that he had been caught..

Indiana State Police said that Windom may be taken to the Fountain County Jail to face local charges and will be transferred and charged at the Lake County Jail in Crown Point.

The silver 2007 Dodge Charger involved was reportedly stolen in a car-jacking on Feb. 17 in a suburb of Milwaukee, according to state police, and the description of the carjacker closely matches that of Windom.

Windom is also wanted on several warrants out of Lake and LaPorte counties in Indiana, and he is also a "person of interest" in a homicide in Lake County.
