Rantoul man charged with drug possession

URBANA — A Rantoul man who police say had cocaine in his vehicle has been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Lazarick Lewis, 28, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Juniper Drive, is due back in court with an attorney on Friday after having been charged with the Class 1 felony Tuesday in Champaign County Circuit Court. If convicted, he faces four to 15 years in prison.

Rantoul police Sgt. Marcus Beach said that just before 5 p.m. Sunday, an officer on patrol saw a vehicle going south on Juniper near Falcon Drive that he recognized as one that Lewis drives. Knowing that Lewis had two warrants from another county for his arrest and that he didn’t have a valid driver’s license, the officer stopped the vehicle, which Lewis was driving.

A search of the car turned up about 6 grams of cocaine, Beach said.

Lewis was also charged with driving under revocation and given a traffic ticket for operating an uninsured vehicle. Because of a prior driving under the influence conviction, Lewis’ license had been revoked.

He remained in the county jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.

"Knowing that Lewis had two warrants from another county for his arrest??" Just how many outstanding warrants does a known criminal need to have before the Rantucky Po-lice do anything??

They saw him, they recognized him, they stopped him, they arrested him, and they found drugs in his car. What is it that they didn't do? I doubt if this guy has given his real address in years (if he even has a fixed address) , so finding him is probably not as easy as you think.
