One person reported injured following accident on Interstate 57

PESOTUM – Icy conditions led to two accidents within a 10-minute period on Interstate 57 near Pesotum on Saturday night.

According to a state police report, William C. Tavernier, 53, who listed an address in Elkhart, Ind., was driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee pulling a trailer north on Interstate 57 at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle on a wet and icy bridge and slid off of the roadway to the left.

The vehicle struck a concrete median barrier with the front driver's side of his vehicle and jackknifed.

Tavernier was taken by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was treated and released.

Tavernier was given a citation for improper lane usage, police said.

Two passengers, Keith Turner, 50, who listed an address in Union, Mich., and Lucille Simmons, 34, who listed an address in Union, Mich., were not injured.

Then a Champaign man was ticketed for improper lane usage during an unrelated crash less than 10 minutes later.

According to a state police report, Jordan T. Panepinto, 20, who listed an address in Champaign was driving north on Interstate 57 when he lost control of his vehicle driving on the ice near Pesotum at 8:38 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle traveled off the road and crashed into a guardrail on the right side of the road. The vehicle then re-entered the highway before coming to rest in the center median.

According to the report, Panepinto and his two passengers, Molly E. Parsley, 20, who listed an address in Tuscola, and Keisha M. Ragland, 20, who listed an address in Tuscola, were not injured.

Penepinto was cited for improper lane usage, the report said.

It's amazing how many interstate wrecks occur right near the ISP post at pesotum.
