Green Street fire started above Mia Za's

Updated 11:30 a.m. Monday.

CHAMPAIGN -- The fire that hit three buildings on Green Street last week started in the ceiling in one of them.

The Champaign Fire Department said today that investigators have found the point of origin of the fire in the southeast corner above the ceiling of Mia Za's cafe.

No cause has been determined yet, but investigators are looking today.

Green Street in Champaign has reopened between Sixth and Wright streets.

Champaign Fire Department Captain Wayne Huckstadt said investigators from the Champaign Fire Department and the state fire marshal's office have spent much of the day at the scene of a fire that affected three Campustown businesses last week.

Huckstadt said the investigators entered the building 625-629 E. Green St. on Sunday morning to survey the damage and pursue the cause of a Wednesday morning fire that hit the building housing Zorba's and Mia Za's restaurants and the Pitaya clothing store.

The street in front of the affected building opened to traffic just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

Huckstadt said the partial demolition of the building was completed on Saturday.
