Two injured in three-vehicle collision
CHAMPAIGN Two people were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon following a three-vehicle collision in west Champaign.
Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Brian Mennenga said the accident happened at Springfield Avenue and Fieldstone Road about 1 p.m. when the driver of a van headed east on Springfield struck the rear end of a car that was slowing or stopped, preparing to turn north on to Fieldstone.
The impact of the collision pushed the car into the path of a westbound box truck, which then struck the car.
The car driver, Lucy Chen, 21, of Naperville, was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where she was treated and released. The driver of the box truck belonging to Nu-Way Transportation, James Gains Jr., 51, of Cooksville, was taken to Provena Covenant Medical Center, where he was also treated and released.
Mennenga said the van driver, Jacqueline Duitsman, 44, of Mahomet, was not injured. She is expected to be issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, he said.
Mennenga said all three vehicles sustained heavy damage.
