Fire in town home wall displaces residents
CHAMPAIGN — A fire believed to be electrical in nature damaged a town home in Champaign Saturday evening.
Firefighters were called to the 1600 block of Valley Road, just south of Hessel Park on the south side of Kirby Avenue, at about 7:20 p.m.
"The call came in as a loss of power and some noise in the wall," said Capt. Wayne Huckstadt. "We had a fire in the wall when we arrived."
Huckstadt said firefighters had to open up the wall and part of the ceiling in a second-floor bedroom to get the fire out. An inspector was trying to determine the exact cause.
The residents of that town home will not be able to stay there a while, Huckstadt said. Nearby town homes were evacuated for a short while until firefighters could get the smoke cleared.
